IS IT TIME FOR ISRAEL TO END ITS OCCUPATION OF THE PALESTINIAN TERRITORIES AND GOLAN HEIGHTS?
WELCOME TO RADIOACTIVITY. THIS PAST SUNDAY MARKED THE 40TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE END OF THE SIX DAY WAR.
On June 5, 1967 the Israelis struck, amid rising verbal threats from its Arab neighbors. In an attack lasting a little over an hour, the Israeli air force destroyed more than 250 Egyptian planes, and Israeli ground forces broke through Egyptian lines in Sinai. The Israelis drove the Egyptians out of Sinai and Gaza, and the Jordanians out of the West Bank and Jerusalem. They then silenced the Syrian guns and captured the Golan Heights. In six days, Israel's soldiers had defeated three major Arab armies and captured territories four times the size of pre-1967 Israel.
Israel continues to control two of the areas captured that day- the Golan Heights, The West Bank of the Jordan River and controls the borders of the Gaza Strip.
Today we’re going to discuss whether the time has come for Israel to give up control of the areas captured after the Sis Day War.
First- there was a demonstration this past Sunday outside the St. Petersburg Times offices in downtown St. Petersburg where both opponents of the Israeli occupation and supporters faced off in a peaceful protest.
WMNF’s Arielle Stevenson was there and she filed this report.
That event that Arielle reported about took place Sunday in St. Petersburg.
We’re joined now by two guests to discuss the issue. Larry Silver is a retired marketing executive and local co-chair of the Tampa Bay chapter of the Jewish National Fund.
Eileen Fleming is a social activist and author of the book MEMOIRS OF A NICE IRISH AMERICAN GIRL'S LIFE IN THE OCCUPIED TERRITORIES. Her essays and reports from the Occupied Palestinian Territories can be seen on the Web site WeAreWideAwake.org, of which she is the editor.
The question we’ll talk about for the next fifty minutes is – After 40 years- is it time for Israel to turn over control of the Golan Heights and the West Bank to the Palestinians and the Syrians?
