Tomorrow in Tampa TBARTA, the local transit agency, will unveil its master plan for the Tampa Bay Area. The agency has been working on the plan for over a year.

There has been much discussion in recent months about Hillsborough County putting a 1 percent tax increase on the 2010 ballot to fund their portion of the plan, but now officials in Pinellas County are discussing a similar plan.

Ken Welch is a Pinellas County Commissioner, and a member of a panel that has been working through the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority. We spoke to him today about that panel.

The St. Petersburg Times reported today that, according to estimates provided to fellow Commissioner Karen Seel, the cost to build rail and double bus service in Pinellas would be between $3.8 to $7.4 million dollars.

sales tax unfair to poor

No more sales tax increases.Please. Mass transit is needed but not on the backs of the poor and low wage workers. Sales tax is unfair. A gas tax is also unfair but you can avoid paying by using the bus, bike, car pool etc. Politicians love the sales tax because the burden falls on those without power. Has WMNF interviewed the retail federation? Its odd that they go along with the sales tax hike.
