Dr. Anila Jacob, MD, MPH, who is a senior scientist with The Environmental Working Group talks about the Safe Chemicals Act which is being worked on in Congress now.
Introduced by Senator Frank Lautenberg in the Senate and Rep. Waxman in the House, the Safe Chemicals act will be an update and revision of the 1976 Toxic Substances Act which has been so dfficult to interpret and enforce.
Of the 83,000 chemcials we deal with today only 200 have been studied, and of that 200, 5 have had some regulations. Babies are being born in this country with 201 chemicals in the umbilical cord blood.
