Occupy Tampa anticipates showdown Thursday night
Today we spoke about developments this week at Occupy Tampa. As you heard on our newscast, the group protested outside a Mitt Romney fundraiser Tuesday night at the Tampa Museum of Art. Some people, including one of our guests Bill Livsey, got inside and mic-checked the gathering.
Our other guest, Ashley Perry has been arrested for trespassing in a downtown park.
Yesterday Occupy Tampa delivered a petition to a Mayor’s staff member to allow protesters to use tents, tables and other items within a park. The protesters have been sleeping on the sidewalk in front of Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park for more than 7 weeks now.
But Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn's chief of staff Santiago Corrada said no further accommodations will be made. Protesters who disobey city ordinances, for example by having tents in a public park, will be arrested. He didn’t say whether or not force would be used. Corrada added the protesters have already been accommodated.
Because their request was not granted, Occupy Tampa plans to use tents on Thursday even though that could mean more arrests. Their General Assembly begins at 7 p.m.
We invited Mayor Buckhorn to be on this show but his staff said he would be out of town.
We also talked about Tuesday night's arrests of Dylan Wallace and Daiquiri Jones and whether the Tampa Police seem to be targeting Jones for arrest.
