In Pinellas County, Catholic Charities officially broke ground Friday this morning on the second phase of a "tent city" for the homeless.

Pinellas Hope originally opened in December 2007 as a unique private-public partnership to create a new facility for the homeless in the County.

Pinellas County Commissioner Ken Welch was at today’s ceremony, and has been a leading advocate for the homeless on the County Commission.

Last month, three different homeless organizations filed a lawsuit against the city of St. Petersburg challenging the constitutionality of several local ordinances that target the homeless.

City Attorneys have called the suit baseless, saying that those ordinances were carefully vetted legally before being implemented.

The number of homeless men, women and children in Hillsborough County has remained steady during the past two years.

According to the Homeless Coalition of Hillsborough County, 9,566 people were counted by 200 volunteers spread out among Hillsborough County this past February. The count comes two years after the 2007 count, which reported 9,532 homeless people in the county.

Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio strongly refuted a claim today that the homeless are being forced out of Tampa as the Super Bowl approaches.

The question was raised after a report in the ST. Petersburg Times on Saturday quoted Rayme Nuckles, the chief executive officer of the Hillsborough County’s Homeless Coalition, as hearing of a plan to ‘aggressively jail homeless people’, coming directly from a captain’s mouth at a meeting.

On Saturday, hundreds of volunteers gathered to begin renovations on Liberty Manor, a home for disabled and homeless military veterans located in Tampa. After becoming subject to costly code violations in May, the Pepsi Bottling Group Foundation and Rebuilding Together Tampa Bay, both nonprofit outreach groups, became partners and coordinated the repair services for Liberty Manor.

Last night at St. Petersburg’s City Hall, City Council members voted unanimously to approve two new laws that will strongly impact the daily existence of the hundreds of homeless citizens who live in the downtown area.

The ordinances, which take effect on Feb. 1, make it unlawful to sleep on downtown sidewalks during the day or leave personal items such as clothing and bedding along the public right of way.

On Saturday, a new Tent City opened in mid-Pinellas County. After five days of operation, there are 180 people on site, living in 171 tents.

The camp is a joint project between Catholic Charities, Pinellas County, and the city of St. Petersburg.

Homeless awareness campaign kicks off listen

The Homeless Coalition of Hillsborough County unveiled a new awareness campaign today. It highlights the fact that virtually anyone can become homeless.

Dozens of paper grocery bags with the faces of Hillsborough County residents who are or formerly were homeless were set up on the steps of the Old Federal Courthouse in downtown Tampa while advocates for the homeless and some of those pictured on the bags spoke to the public.
