GOP Congresswoman Ginny Brown-Waite is downplaying reports that some stock purchases she made last year have created a conflict of interest problem.
A Cleveland Plain Dealer story published last Friday showed that Brown-Waite, along with several other members on the House Financial Services Committees, bought or sold stocks at the same time the federal government was spending billions of dollars into financial markets.

Tampa Bay could soon get a second Social Security hearing office to reduce its substantial backlog of requests for disability claims.
When someone files for disability claims with the Social Security Office of Disability Adjudication and Review in Tampa, they have to wait more than a year before receiving benefits.

Today two local Congressional candidates called on a public television station to provide a full opportunity for them to be seen and heard by the public.
WEDU, the local Public Broadcasting System affiliate, has canceled televised debates because they say the incumbents, Ginny Brown-Waite and Gus Bilirakis, have declined to participate.

Three Democrats are running for the chance to face Republican
Ginny Brown-Waite in November in Florida’s 5th Congressional District. The District includes parts of eight counties, including Hernando and Pasco.
John Russell is perhaps the best known candidate in the race. It’s his third consecutive campaign. At a forum in Tampa yesterday, WMNF asked if he’s a better candidate the third time around.

U.S. Rep. Ginny Brown-Waite angered many last month when she referred to residents of Guam and Puerto Rico as “foreign citizens.” Her comments came in a press release regarding the tax rebates that Americans will receive under Congress’ economic stimulus package.
