Activists from across the state will converge on Tallahassee next week for Moral Monday. More than a dozen groups will demand a host of changes to state laws. Reverend R.L. Gundy of the Florida Southern Christian Leadership Conference says the coalition aims at tackling issues surrounding low-income and minority Florida residents.

A well-liked social activist in St. Petersburg has been found murdered inside her home on 17th Ave. North.

According to the St. Petersburg Police Department, 54-year old Paula Whitthaus was found dead along with her 67-year old male roommate after what a department press release described as a brutal attack.

USF students are planning a protest Thursday night against shorter library hours.

But instead of a traditional “sit-in,” the activists are staging a “sit-out” outside the shuttered library where they used to do late night studying on the Tampa campus.

WMNF News spoke with Larry Roop, a 1st year student majoring in nursing and with another organizer, Melissa Garzon, a 2nd year student majoring in sociology.

Army Private Bradley Manning’s court martial starts on Monday and nationwide rallies are planned this weekend. A group in Tampa will show their support for Manning in front of MacDill Air Force Base Saturday.

Manning faces life in prison for releasing classified information to the whistleblowing website, WikiLeaks. The information uncovered military attacks on civilians in Iraq, among other things.

Three people who barricaded themselves in the Keystone XL pipeline were arrested in Winona, Texas Monday.

Before workers arrived this morning, activists Matt Almonte (from Tampa) and Glen Collins locked themselves inside a pipe segment waiting to be laid in the ground to halt construction of the oil pipeline.

According to the website Tar Sands Blockade, a third activist, Isabel Indigo Brooks who was also in the pipe was also arrested Monday afternoon.
