Another Tampa Bay area city may be getting a bike share program; transportation officials held a bicycle sharing public information and visioning session Tuesday night in St. Petersburg.

St. Petersburg’s Transportation and Parking Management and the United States Environmental Protection Agency hosted a public workshop for the development of the local bike share system.

Soon Tampa residents and visitors will be able to cruise around town on bikes even if they don’t own one. Mayor Bob Buckhorn unveiled the new Coast Bike Share program that will rent 300 bikes at 30 locations this spring.

The bike hubs will be spread throughout downtown, Ybor City and Hyde Park. During a press conference at Curtis Hixon Downtown Waterfront Park Tuesday morning, Buckhorn said the project, which is privately funded, is three years in the making.

The Tampa Police Department will be purchasing 200 bicycles costing nearly $1,600 each for use during the Republican National Convention in August. This week, officers from five law enforcement agencies across the state are being trained on how to safely patrol from a bicycle. Tampa police captain Brian Dugan said there are several reasons why a bicycle patrol program will help with security efforts during a convention that is expected to draw 70,000 visitors.
