St. Pete unveils 8 new design possibilities for Pier listen

The City of St. Petersburg has unveiled eight possible concepts for a new Pier design.

Eight architectural firms spent up to $30,000 to create initial design concepts, which can now be seen on the city’s website.

Raul Quintana is St. Petersburg’s city architect. WMNF News spoke with him this morning before the designs were unveiled.

City Council rejects proposal for local vendor preference listen

The Tampa City Council rejected a proposal today that would have given local businesses preference in bidding for city contracts. The proposal was intended to give local businesses a leg up in the bidding process, but many state-wide construction companies opposed the idea, saying that it might discourage competition.

Ybor City representatives angry about the construction of a new facility for the Ybor branch of Hillsborough Community College that they say violates the standards of the historic district received no satisfaction after pleading their case before the Tampa City Council today.

HCC constructed the building without getting approval from the BLC- the Barrio Latino Commission – which has the responsibility of preserving the historic fabric of Ybor City.

Beginning in 2010, Hillsborough County Schools will go three years without constructing a single new school because enrollment numbers are not expected to increase as quickly as in the past.

This morning, the Hillsborough School Board held a workshop on the district’s five-year construction plan.
