Author of Acclaimed Backyard Chicken-Raising Memoir on "Talking Animals"
My guest on "Talking Animals" May 1 will be Lauren Scheuer, author of “Once Upon A Flock: Life With My Soulful Chickens.”
A veteran children’s book illustrator and author of the popular blog, “Scratch And Peck,” Scheur was seeking a new project to express her longtime love of power tools when she hit on the idea of raising backyard chickens in her New England home—chiefly, at least initially, for the allure of the coop-building.
As recounted in “Once Upon A Flock,” Scheuer plunges headlong into all facets of this new undertaking, researching chicken-raising, drawing meticulous sketches of possible coops and more, as her bemused husband and teenage daughter look on.
But the story kicks into high gear when the flock arrives—Hatsy, Lil’ White, Piigeon and Lucy—with the saga including Scheur’s efforts to manage their very different personalities, the rivalries that unfold, the brooding & assorted misadventures that ensue as Lucy wants to be a mom when there’s no rooster amidst the flock…and some serious behavioral adjustments required of the family terrier, Marky, who became quite enchanted with all the chicken action in the backyward.
Named one of the Top 10 Most Anticipated Memoirs of 2013 by Publishers Weekly, “Once Upon A Flock” features not only Scheuer’s lean, often-wry prose, but also her photographs and illustrations.
Lauren Scheuer speaks with us live on "Talking Animals" on May 1 at 9am ET, and listeners are invited to participate in the conversation by calling (813-239-9663) or e-mailing (DJ@wmnf.org).
