He has written hundreds of songs either by himself or in collaboration with writers like Spooner Oldham, Chips Moman, Donnie Fritts, Carson Whitsett, Gary Nicholson, Eddie Hinton, Arthur Alexander and others. He was there in the early days of FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Al. with Rick Hall when great soul hits were being made. He co-wrote Do Right Woman, Do Right Man performed by Aretha Franklin, Dark End of the Street by James Carr, A Woman Left Lonely by Janis Joplin and later Charlie Rich, I’m Your Puppet by James and Bobby Purify, Out of Left Field and It Tears Me Up by Percy Sledge, Nine Pound Steel by Joe Simon, Sweet Inspiration by the Sweet Inspirations, You Left the Water Running by Otis Redding and a multitude of other top forty songs. One of Irma Thomas’s top albums was My Hearts in Memphis- The Songs of Dan Penn. His music has been covered by many in the soul, blues, rock and country genres.

Following the FAME days, he moved on to American Recording Studios in Memphis where he produced the highly popular group the Box Tops. He and Spooner Oldham wrote many of the top selling songs for the group such as Cry Like a Baby, I Met Her in Church and People Gonna Talk. Dan was at American when artists like Elvis, Dusty Springfield and Neil Diamond were coming to Memphis for that soulful sound.

Dan now lives and continues to write and record in Nashville. His latest album Living on Mercy is about as good as it gets. He performs nationally and has a large following in Japan. He will smoothly sing his songs at this performance and share stories of working with artists like Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin, Alex Chilton, etc.

This is his first visit back to the Palladium in 15 years. Proceeds from the show will benefit WMNF Community Radio and the Palladium. More info and ticket reservation link here.
