Born May 1, 1980 in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, Lizz Straight has carved out her own slice of the universe in her short 25 years on earth. As a child having lived in 8 states, been born to a 15-year-old, single mother and being raised Catholic and black in the South has lent her a multitude of environments and circumstances to illustrate through her poetry. She been featured at several venues across the country and in Europe, and has produced a poetry CD 'Misanthropic Topics of a Literary Luminary' and two poetry chap books ('Nursery Rhymes, Heart Attacks and Public Service Announcements' and 'Straight, No Chaser!'. She is a member of the Tampa chapter of the Tallahassee, FL based poetry troupe, 'Black on Black Rhyme', and the Slanted Eye poetry collective (www.slanted-eye.com). She?s was member of the 2003 Tampa Slam Team that took first place in the Hot Air Slam in Delray Beach, FL. She was the individual first place winner in the 11th Annual Southern Fried Slam in New Orleans, LA, 2003, the 2nd place winner at Southern Fried 2004 in Miami, FL, and second place winner at the Southern Fried 2005 in Charlotte, NC. Lizz is the only person in the history of Southern Fried to come in the top two three years in a row. She was also a member of the Pensacola Slam Team that ranked 11th out of 83 teams from the U.S. and Canada in Chicago at the National Poetry Slam 2003. This year as host of ?Poetry Is?? (a weekly poetry radio show on WMNF, 88.5 FM) Lizz Straight was awarded the privilege to interview Common, Chicago born emcee while on tour promoting his classic album, ?Be? in August 2005 in Tampa, Florida. Featured in the poetry documentary "Rhapsodists" featuring 13 female poets from across the country and telling the story of the spoken word artist from the female perspective, Lizz is considered one of the best poets on the spoken word scene today. and hosts a weekly poetry radio show titled 'Poetry Is..." on WMNF, 88.5 FM, Tampa, Florida.
