Greenpeace to put coal in Duke’s stockings at St. Pete rally

State Representative Dwight Dudley filed legislation Tuesday to keep utility companies from charging higher rates when billing cycles are longer. In a press release, the Democrat from St. Petersburg said Republican State Senator Charlie Dean will file a companion bill soon. It comes in response to Duke Energy Florida adjusting the timing of meter reading that added several days to customers’ bill earlier this year resulting in overcharges.

Meanwhile, two local state lawmakers filed bills that would repeal and refund the advance recovery fee Duke has charged customers for the construction of a nuclear plant that is now off the table.

These are just some of the reasons many Duke customers are upset and why the local Greenpeace chapter is organizing a rally outside Duke’s offices in St. Petersburg on Thursday. WMNF interviewed Kate Melges, a field organizer with Greenpeace in St. Petersburg.
