WMNF’s 15th annual showcase of top national and regional Americana/roots bands
Eilen Jewell Band American Songwriter describes Eilen Jewell as one of America’s most intriguing, creative and idiosyncratic voices. The Boise, Idaho songwriter is one of a kind. She has played many WMNF events over almost 15 years – and we are especially excited that her latest album “Gypsy” has become a favorite for the station.
By turns personal and political, pissed off and blissed out, Jewell’s first album of original material since 2015 expands brief moments of joy into lifetimes, and distills epic sentiments and persistent doubts into succinct songs.
Jewell seamlessly blends heavy electric guitars and dirty fiddles on the rollicking country rocker Crawl with the sweet and understated horn section of the tender Witness. 79 Cents (The Meow Song) skewers sexism and discrimination with pointed humor over a circus bed of musical saw and horns.
Longtime fans who love Eilen Jewell in classic country mode will delight in the pedal steel driven These Blues and the sole cover on Gypsy, You Cared Enough To Lie, written by fellow Idahoan and country legend Pinto Bennett.
Rather than pulling artist and listener this way and that, the tensions within and between these twelve tracks propel Eilen Jewell’s eighth studio album forward as a remarkably cohesive full length.
Betty Fox Band With an extensive background in gospel and a lifelong passion for soul music, Betty Fox has come a long way from her southern roots to headlining festivals and captivating thousands with her raw swagger and unwavering talent. The 2015 representative of the Suncoast Blues Society, an International Blues Challenge Finalist, and multiple winner of Creative Loafing’s Best of the Bay awards, she has now released an album, Peace in Pieces, that is getting her new audiences and international play.
Will Quinlan and Murder Creek Will Quinlan has been playing “Americana” music since before the term was put into use. Moving deftly from gritty and sorrowful, to angry and ultimately triumphant, Quinlan’s earnest labors result in a profoundly original take on contemporary music.
Joshua Reilly and the Corn Fed Locals Joshua Reilly is one of most outstanding singer-songwriters in the Tampa Bay area. Every now and then, a song, a voice, a lyric, splits your soul right in two and then proceeds to feed both sides. Raw yet refined, mournful yet optimistic, heartbroken yet inspiring… such is the dichotomy, the paradox, and the musical delivery of Joshua Reilly.
