A slate of panelist for the upcoming criminal justice summit joins in as we discuss a host of issues facing prisons. The panelist include ex-offender Keith Harris who advocates more air conditioning in Florida’s and the nation’s prisons. Summit organizer, Nate Schaidt, Executive Director for Horizon Communities of Prisons and Josh Monteiro who discusses community supervision and probation.

The Supreme Court reconvenes today for the first time since late June. The only case today for the court is the First Step Act, which aimed in part to reduce mandatory minimum sentences and give judges more discretion.

The First Step Act requires the Department of Justice (DOJ) to develop a risk and needs assessment system to be used by
BOP to assess the recidivism risk of all federal prisoners and to place prisoners in programs and productive activities to
reduce this risk.
