Volunteers and St. Petersburg city officials worked together this weekend to bring progress out of tragedy. Three years ago, an eight year old girl was struck by a stray bullet and killed during a drive by gun assault in midtown’s Bartlett Park neighborhood. After the shooting, members of the community came together to start fixing up the neighborhood. Following in the footsteps of Tampa, the City of Gulfport now has a Domestic Partnership Registry. Last night the city council unanimously supported a registry to allow unmarried same-sex or opposite-sex couples become eligible for some of the same rights as married couples. This morning Mayor Mike Yakes signed the ordinance during a ceremony that is archived on YouTube. The city anticipates the registry to be active around the 4th of July.

Pinellas County Commissioners are continuing efforts to create a strategic plan they hope will improve the quality of life for their constituents. Results of a survey of 800 diverse residents released last night at a meeting in Safety Harbor gave county staff some idea of what services are most important.
