Late Thursday night the St. Petersburg City Council rebuffed the Mayor's calls to raise revenue through a fire fee for all properties; instead the city increased its property tax millage rate for the first time in 2 decades.

Hillsborough County is one step closer to revamping its longstanding trash hauling monopoly. At a workshop yesterday, County Commissioners voted to move forward with a competitive bidding process that will force the existing companies to compete with others from other states for county contracts. After more than 8-months of conversation, Commissioner Mark Sharpe said the next step needed to be taken immediately.

Pinellas County is slowly moving forward with plans to ask voters to pay for a major transit overhaul. A study released this year lays the groundwork for both light rail and increased bus service to support it. While groups around the country are remembering the victims of 9/11, other groups are marking the day for a different reason. A group of Peace activists rallied at USF and downtown Tampa today to remind people that American lives weren’t the only ones lost as a result of the attacks that day.
