A major education bill unanimously passed the Florida Senate Education Committee Tuesday, after a few changes from the version that passed the state House; about  125 teachers and their supporters from Pasco, Hernando Pinellas and Hillsborough Counties rallied against the bill and for public education Monday in Land O’ Lakes.

Don Peace is president of the Pasco County teachers’ union, the United School Employees of Pasco (USEP). He says they were commemorating the anniversary of a major teacher walk-out and strike in Florida 50 years ago.

One of the parts of HB 7055 that Peace opposes would give bullied students a voucher to attend a private school.

On Tuesday a Florida Senate committee supported a proposal to put law enforcement officers in every school in the state. Only slightly more than half of Florida’s more than 4,000 public schools have the law enforcement officers, called school resource officers. They are allowed to carry a weapon on a school campus. The Senate Education Committee voted to include the requirement in the sweeping education bill that is now moving through the legislature.
