This morning, Florida Education Association President Andy Ford proposed a short-term increase in the state’s sales tax dedicated to all levels of public schools.

Speaking at the FEA’s annual Delegate Assembly in Tampa, Ford noted that public schools had undergone drastic cuts over the last two school years and that the temporary sales tax increase would tide public schools over until the state economy improved.

Mobile abortion billboard goes through Tampa listen

If you were driving in downtown Tampa at midday today, you might have seen a billboard truck with graphic depictions of abortions.

The mobile billboards are an initiative from Southern California-based pro life group the Center for Bio Ethical Reform.

Mark Harrington, executive director of that group, described what motorists who encounter his truck would see.

The city of Tampa declared today Helen Gordon Davis Day in honor of the former state senator, who has been fighting for equality for women and others since before entering politics in 1974. Tampa receives $13.6 million to prevent mortgage defaults listen

Last month the Housing and Urban Development Department announced that Florida will get more than $500 million in new federal foreclosure funds to prevent further home loan defaults and deal with the foreclosure crises.

Today, the director of Tampa’s Business and Housing Development Department, Cyndy Miller, said the city will get $13.6 million dollars.

The Tampa City Council today voted to recommend to Mayor Pam Iorio that she appoint an investigative body to study interactions between the Tampa Police Department and residents at a public housing development.

The action was proposed after several public housing residents complained of ill treatment by the police.

In Robert Baer’s new book, he says that because of indifference or ignorance, Iran has emerged as a nation every bit as capable of altering America’s destiny as traditional superpowers China and Russia.

Hillsborough County Commissioners, led by Rose Ferlita, lashed out at members of the County’s Health & Social Services today after they switched the vendor they use with their indigent health care program without consulting County Commissioners.

Attorney General Bill McCollum today announced that his office has filed charges against fivve debt relief organizations, and is investigating five others for what he calls credit scams.

At a news conference in Tallahassee this morning, McCollum said the state has received more than 1,400 complaints about debt relief organizations, a 62 percent increase from a year ago. McCollum said there were several organizations in the Tampa Bay area that his office was investigating.

Hillsborough County Commissioners today awarded the Moral Courage Award to Dave Brown, a Sun City center retiree.
