Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump has once again stirred up controversy over his remarks on women, this time saying those who get abortions should be punished. Although he later retracted his remarks, they already drew a firestorm of criticism and accusations of sexism. Today we are joined by two political scientists, Drs Valerie Sperling and Robert G. Boatright, who have been watching the presidential primary campaign this year in the US looking at how the candidates use gender and sex—especially how gender and sex are being addressed by Donald Trump. Sperling has previously written a book, Sex, Politics, and Putin: Political Legitimacy in Russia, on the use of gender politics in the Putin Regime, and Boatright’s latest book,Getting Primaried: The Changing Politics of Congressional Primary Challenges, looks at the role of interest groups in congressional elections and the patterns of primary challenges over the past 40 years.
