INVESTIGATIVE JOURNALISM: IS IT ENDANGERED?

06/04/02

Four prize-winning investigative journalists - Kristina Borjesson (ex-CBS, CNN, PBS), Bob Port (N.Y. Daily News, ex-AP, St. Petersburg Times), Jane Akre (ex-WTVT), and Gary Webb (ex-San Jose Mercury News) - discussed their contributions to a new book called INTO THE BUZZSAW (Prometheus). Each journalist told of problems they had getting investigative news stories published or broadcast. They said that as media consolidates and more outlets are purchased by large corporations and as journalists become closer to the institutions they are supposed to cover, the press becomes more docile and less apt to put resources into investigative reporting.
