PRESIDENT BUSH PROPOSES TAX BREAKS ON STOCKHOLDER'S DIVIDENDS

01/08/03

Yesterday the president unveiled a proposal to restart the nation's ailing economy. The proposal includes cutting dividend taxes and accelerating income tax cuts. Our guest today was Randy Albelda, professor of economics and chair of the Public Policy PHd program at the University of Massachussetts at Boston. (Albelda is also co-author of LOST GROUND published by South End Press.) She says that targetting upper income taxpayers will help a group that has already benefitted from the economic boom of the 1990s. She says what's needed is a stimulus package which is targeted to low and middle income people. She says that stimulus package should put people to work, help close the income gap, and prevent states from laying off workers and cutting essential services.
