UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI JANITORS STRIKE ENDS-Andrew Stelzer

05/01/06

Janitors of the university of Miami are ending their two month long strike, as they have reached an agreement with UNICCO the subcontracting company which employs them. Some janitors and their student supporters had resorted to a hunger strike in recent weeks, calling for the right to organize a union and vote to join the union using a card check election. UNICCO would not agree to a card, check, insisting instead on a secret ballot. But less than 2 hours ago, an announcement was made that UNICCO had agreed to a card check. Tanya Aquino is one of the University of Miami who was on hunger strike in solidarity with the janitors.

JANITORS WIN

That was University of Miami student Tanya Aquino, explaining that Janitors at the university of Miami have reached an agreement with their employer, the subcontractor UNICCO—the janitors will be allowed to vote whether they want to join the SEIU using a card check election. UNICCO did not return WMNFs calls for comment.
