The chairman of the African People’s Socialist party recently arrived back from a solidarity building trip to Southern Africa. At a press conference today, Omali Yeshitela, who is also founder of the Uhuru movement, spoke in the heart of south St. Petersburg about his attempts to unify Africans across the globe. WMNF’s Roxanne Escobales reports on why the Uhurus would like to see the U.S. and European countries taken to an international tribunal and made to repay Africans worldwide for colonizing the African continent and enslaving its peoples.

ACT: What we want is what was stolen from us…

That was Omali Yeshitela speaking today about what he hopes to see as a result of an international reparations tribunal he is organizing to take place in June 2007 in Berlin, Germany.

Yeshitela who is the founder and chairman of the worldwide African People’s Socialist Party, says the biggest resource stolen from Africa was its people.

ACT: the biggest resource stolen from us is people

On a recent trip to Southern Africa, Yeshitela met with political leaders, academics and youth organizations to seek cooperation with his movement. What he encountered, he said, was enthusiastic support and broad media coverage.

Locating the international reparations tribunal in Germany has historical significance. The Berlin Conference which took place in 1884 and 1885 effectively carved up the African continent among the mainly European countries in attendance. This partitioning, said Yeshitela, divided the continent and made the possibility of a strong African economy untenable, a situation which continues today.

And in 2004, Germany formally apologized for the massacre of 65,000 members of the Herero tribe in Namibia over 100 years ago. But the German government refused to pay compensation to descendants of the victims. Yeshitela points out that this massacre took place decades before the Holocaust. Yet, he says, widespread support exists for the Jews but not for the Africans.

Yeshitela also said that the future of African Americans lies in uniting with Africa.

You can hear more about Omali Yeshitela’s travels in Africa and the international reparations tribunal at meeting of the African People’s Socialist Party at 4pm this Sunday May 21 at the Uhuru House at 1245 18th Avenue South, St. Petersburg.
