DAVIS ELECTION POST MORTEM by Roxanne Escobales

11/08/06

31 million dollars. That’s how much MORE money Republican governor elect Charlie Crist spent on his campaign then Jim Davis. And that, says Davis, is the key to Crist’s victory. In his late night concession speech yesterday Davis said it would’ve taken a “political miracle to beat the financial muscle of the Crist campaign. He emphasized that again today, speaking outside his headquarters in South Tampa.

Davis said Crist’s overwhelming campaign funds were spent on ads that he just couldn’t match.

ACT:

One area where Davis outperformed Crist was in winning Hispanic votes.

Davis’s running mate, former Senator Daryl Jones, was poised to become the state’s first black lieutenant governor. Last night Jones told WMNF that while money was definitely a factor in their loss, it wasn’t the only challenge he and Davis were up against.

ACT:

Less than 4 million people voted in yesterday’s election, representing around 37 percent of voters. Jones had projected that for the Davis campaign to win 6 million people would have needed to vote.

ACT:

Outgoing Democratic state senator and minority leader in the legislature Les Miller from Tampa joined Davis on stage. Miller said that the African American community needs to be politicized.

ACT:

Today during his press conference, Davis did not reveal much about his next steps. But he did say he’ll remain active in Florida’s political future.

ACT:

That left journalists wondering if Florida will see Davis running for governor in 2010.
