WE ARE LEARNING MORE ABOUT THE EARLY CHRISTIAN CHURCH; NEWLY TRANSLATED WRITINGS ABOUT EARLY CHRISTIANITY HAVE BEEN UNCOVERED, SHEDDING NEW LIGHT ON THE FOUNDING OF ONE OF THE WORLD'S MAJOR RELIGIONS.

THE MOST RECENTLY UNCOVERED WRITING IS THE GOSPEL OF JUDAS AND HERE TO TALK ABOUT THE GOSPEL OF JUDAS IS ONE OF THIS COUNTRY'S LEADING SCHOLARS ON THE EARLY CHRISTAIN CHURCH- UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA PROFESSOR OF RELIGIOUS STUDIES BART EHRMAN.

EHRMAN TOLD WMNF'S ROB LOREI THAT CARBON DATIN ESTABLISHES THE DOCUMENT AS BEING CREATED IN 2ND OR 3RD CENTURY AD. HE SAYS IT PAINTS JUDAS AS JESUS' CLOSEST CONFIDANT AND THAT IT WAS JESUS' WISH THAT JUDAS WOULD BETRAY HIM. IT PAVED THE WAY FOR THE CRUCIFICTION AND THE RESURRECTION.

EHRMAN ALSO DISCUSSED THE CONTEXT OF THE GOSPEL OF JUDAS- THAT IT WAS KNOWN TO THE EARLY CHURCH BUT WAS ONE OF THE BOOKS OF THE BIBLE EXCLUDED AS THE BIBLICAL CANNON WAS DEVELOPED.

OUR GUEST'S BOOK IS "THE LOST GOSPEL OF JUDAS ISCARIOT: A NEW LOOK AT BETRAYER AND BETRAYED" (Oxford University). EHRMAN IS A PROFESSOR OF RELIGIOUS STUDIES AT THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA CHAPEL HILL.
