Lethal injection for execution was conceived as a comparatively humane alternative to electrocution or cyanide gas. But a new report by a team of doctors says that in fact, death row inmates may actually suffocate while still aware. The report has been published on the online medical journal PlosMedicine. It comes 4 months after then Florida Governor Jeb Bush put a temporary halt on all executions in Florida after a botched lethal injection in the case of Angel Diaz. New Governor Charlie Crist has said he will wait to act on the death penalty following a report by a commission charged with studying the state’s procedures in administering lethal injection. It took 34 minutes for Diaz to die last December 16th. A Medical examine said that’s because the the needles used to kill him were inserted improperly
Teresa Zimmers is a research assistant professor of Surgery at the University of Miami’s Leonard School of Medicine, and the lead author of the new report (roll tape#1 o.q.”as a method of execution”)
