Our guest, Simon Head, is the author of a new book titled, THE NEW RUTHLESS ECONOMY: Work and Power in the Digital Age (Oxford University Press). Booklist calls The New Ruthless Economy, "a provocative call for the rehumanization of business and society, revolting against the impact of reengineering and massive information technology systems." Timed bathroom breaks, scripted replies to customer inquiries, and little to no reward for increases in productivity, are all considered results of the information technology that is supposed to make work easier, according to Head. Head also explores how this new regimented approach is infiltrating our health care system - ultimately denying us our humanity and creating a system doomed to fail because of it. Simon Head is Director on the Project on Technology and the Workplace at The Century Foundation in New York City.
