The economic slowdown has certainly affected the Tampa Bay area.

Over the weekend, WMNF spoke with Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio on a number of topics, including how the previously bustling Ybor City area has become extremely tough for local merchants and restauranters, even on weekends.

Although crime has dropped dramatically in the historic entertainment district since Iorio took office, the perception that it’s a violent area still seems to persist.

Asked what, if anything, she can do about that, Iorio said the whole city is hurting because of the current fiscal crises.

Last week, local governments thoughout Florida were rejoicing after they learned they can go back to planning redevelopment projects using tax incremental and other public financing as the Florida Supreme Court reversed itself on forcing municipalities to take such decisions to a referendum first.
