Last night Tampa became the 290th local municipality to pass an Ordinance denouncing parts of the controversial USA Patriot Act.

The preminent legal organization that has been fighting against parts of the Patriot Act has been the American Civil Liberties Union.

Today in Tampa, the executive Director of the Florida ACLU, Howard Simon, addressed that law and other issues at a speech at the Tiger Bay Club.

This past week during the Public Hearings of the 9/11 Commission, there was much talk that the passage of the Patriot Act has aided law enforcement since the terrorist attacks.....But Simon disputed that , calling the Act a Con Game (roll tape#1 o.q."

Speaking a day after the Tampa City Council officially went on the record denouncing provisions of the Patriot Act, the ACLU Director was asked if he denounced all aspects of the law, Or just parts of it ....Simon said that the Act itself is 357 pages long, and is quite complex (roll tape#2 o.q."7 to 9 provisions")

But Simon said the ACLU is legally challenging 2 of the most egregious sections of the Act...Including Section 215 (roll tape#3 o.q."

Yesterday the Florida State Senate passed a plan that would ask voters if the state should move ahead with a parental notice law for pregnant minors seeking abortions. After it clears the House, it will go in front of the voters this November as a Constitutional Amendment to limit the rights of minors on abortion.

Florida ACLU Director Howard Simon says his organization will use all their resources to stop Parental Notification from becoming state law (roll tape#3 o.q."everyplace in the country")

OUTRO: Earlier this week the Florida ACLU announced the opening of its new offices in Tampa....
