The 34th International Folk Fair was held at Vinoy Park in St. Petersburg March 27-29, 2009. The theme of this year was the “Wonders of the World.”
Visitors could learn about different cultures through handcrafts, ethnic foods, folk dances and music presented at ethnic villages. The German Schuhplattler Dancers, the Italian Tarantella Dancers, the Polish Gorale Ensemble, and other ethnic groups performed folk music and dances on Saturday.
According to the organizer, the St. Petersburg International Folk Fair Society Inc. (SPIFFS), the folk festival began during the U.S. bicentennial celebration. SPIFFS is the only independent nonprofit multiethnic organization of its kind in the United States that consists of ethnic member groups.
The society's goal is to preserve and encourage ethnic cultures and to promote American citizenship and its ideals among all nationalities in the Tampa Bay area, according to its website. For more information, visit Spiffs.org.
