Earlier this year, President Barack Obama appointed Van Jones as special advisor for green jobs, enterprise and innovation with the Council on Environmental Quality. Jones spoke to reporters by teleconference today about how the Obama administration plans to create jobs in renewable technologies.
Jones says President Obama will be in a closed Maytag factory in Iowa tomorrow – Earth Day. The plant is being retrofitted to produce parts of wind turbines. The federal stimulus package will help to create green jobs, according to Jones.
Jones says paying workers to weatherize and retrofit homes will recycle dollars within a community, and the improvements will pay for themselves within two to four years.
By creating green jobs, the country can fight poverty and pollution at the same time, he said, callng it an Earth Day agenda for everyone.
