Last week Hillsborough County Democratic Commissioner Pat Frank confirmed that she WILL step down from her Seat on the Commission - half way thru her term- to run for the Clerk of the Circuit Court....

Since that announcement, 3 Republicans have filed papers to run Frank's seat, but so far, NO democrats have.

The Republican with perhaps the best name recognition is Mark Sharpe, currently a Tampa school teacher, who unsuccessfully ran for Congress 3 times during the 1990's....

Also filing papers are Jim Davison, who ran 2 years ago unsuccessfully for the County's District 2 seat in New Tampa, and Bob Blair, who has never ran for office before but has previously worked for State Senator John Grant.

Among the Democrats mentioned for the County Wide Seat include Current Commission Chairman Thomas Scott, as well as Frank Sanchez and Bob Buckhorn, who both lost to Pam Iorio in the race for Tampa Mayor just over a year ago.

After initially expressing some interest, Sanchez announced he will NOT run.....But Bob Buckhorn told WMNF today that he IS interested, and will make a decision within the next few weeks (roll tape#1 o.q."make a contribution")

Buckhorn admits that whichever direction he'll go, he'll have to decide very quickly (roll tape#2 o.q."I will do that")

Currently there are 4 Democrats on the County Commission , and 3 Republicans...But with Frank stepping down, as well as Democrat Jan Platt, there is some pressure by Hillsborough Democrats for a name candidate to get into the race. WMNF asked Buckhorn if he is concerned that there are NOT more Democrats ready to step up

(roll tape#3 o.q. "which I think is unfortunate")

In the race for Tampa Mayor, Buckhorn finished 3rd, narrowly missing out to Frank Sanchez for 2nd place and getting into a run-off with Pam Iorio last March.

Since then he has been working for the political consulting firm Dewey Square, which has offices in Tampa and throughout the Country...WMNF asked the former City Councilman and aide to former Mayor Sandy Freedman how he would evaluate the woman who defeated him, Pam Iorio (roll tape#4 o.q." sad use of their time")

That's former Tampa City Councilman Bob Buckhorn.......To recap, Buckhorn says he'll make a decision on whether or not to run for a seat on the Hillsborough County Commission within the next couple of weeks...
