Our guest Robert Lacey has just written his second book on Saudi Arabia. For both books he spent time living in the oil-rich royal kingdom. His first book was banned in SA. In his second book (INSIDE THE KINGDOM: Kings, Clerics, Modernists, Terrorists, and the Struggle for Saudi Arabia) he gives us a history the Kingdom, a description of the centuries-long Sunni-Shia struggle, the reaction of Saudi rulers to the rise of religious militancy and to 9/11. The Saudi Kingdom is full of contradictions and competing forces- it's far from the static state often depicted in Western media.
