Protesters will gather Thursday in Sarasota and St. Petersburg to ask Gov. Charlie Crist to veto a controversial abortion bill passed by the state Legislature. It requires women seeking an abortion to first view an ultrasound of their fetus, and restricts private health insurance from offering abortion coverage.

On Wednesday, WMNF asked Crist whether he would veto or sign the controversial bill.

Well, listen, I'm focused on that legislation as well. I've stated publicly before, it gives me some concern. I don't have the bill on my desk, so it's not available to me as yet. But once it gets there, I'll study it very closely and try to do what I think is right.

The rallies for a veto of HB 1143 will be in St. Petersburg from 10:30 in the morning until 11:30 in front of Crist’s residence at One Beach Drive.

In Sarasota, they will meet at 4:30 in the afternoon on the Bayfront: U.S. 41 between Gulfstream and Ringling.

Sign the Letter: Tell Crist to Veto HB 1143

On the last day of the 2010 Legislative Session, the Florida Legislature passed HB 1143 - sweeping anti-choice legislation that restricts women's access to reproductive health care and drastically chips away at Roe v. Wade. House Republicans rammed through a measure to require women seeking an abortion to pay for an ultrasound and hear a doctor give a description of the fetus. The cost of an ultrasound exam can vary between $200 and $1,000. The bill also restricts businesses that receive tax credits from providing their employees with health insurance that covers abortion, even if they don't use federal or state subsidies to purchase their plans. This goes far beyond the Hyde Amendment by prohibiting abortion from being covered in private health insurance plans. This attack on women's health care by anti-choice Republicans passed both chambers despite never being vetted through a single committee, and never allowing for public comment. Help us urge Governor Crist to veto HB 1143, which interferes with private health care decisions and restricts private health insurance from offering abortion coverage. HB 1143 currently awaits the Governor's decision. Women will not stand for legislation that takes away our rights and leaves us worse off than we are today. http://www.change.org/actions/view/urgent_tell_charlie_crist_to_veto_hb_1143_4

Please support HB1145. Thanks!

If Crist has ANY hope of winning any Democratic and independent votes, he should think very seriously about a veto on this bill. He has already lost the vote of the right...so, not only is this the smart thing to do....it is the RIGHT thing!!

Costly litigation to ensue if HB 1145 is passed

This legislation, HB 1145, is headed for certain and expensive litigation if it is passed. Not only will it be costly, but also will most likely be struck down due to its violation of women's rights, especially their right to privacy, ensured by the US Constitution. During these hard times, is Governor Crist willing to foolishly incure the expense of such litigation? For that reason alone, his veto would show his care and concern for the well-being of the entire State of Florida, something the State's narrow-minded legislators have failed to show.
