Young Women Challenge Mass Media Concepts of Beauty05/18/10 Robert Lorei
Radioactivity: Live Call-In (Tuesday) | Listen to this entire show:
First up today: young girls and teens are bombarded with images of beauty — from cable tv shows, the networks, magazines, films and even facebook. According to the American Psychological Association, the three most common mental health problems among girls -- eating disorders, depression, low self esteem -- are all linked to depictions of girls and teens in the media. 90% of girls in recent study conducted for the Girl Scouts said they couldn’t measure up to beauty standards.
Our first guest is a 12-year-old from Tampa: Esme Zodrow who is on the editorial board of a magazine called New Moon Girls. The magazine helps girls develop healthy strategies to develop their full potential, without relying on the images of the perfect girl that are depicted in main stream media.
