911 COMMISSION - Mitch Perry

07/19/04

President Bush, speaking to reporters during a meeting with the Chilean President, said he was NOT yet ready to comment on reports that the 9/11 Commission is recommending creation of a director of national intelligence. (roll tape#1 o.q. "best possible intelligence")

Over the weekend the NY Times reported that sources say the 9/11 Commission's reports says 8 of the 19 Hijackers who committed the terrorist attacks in America at one time all passed through Iran....The President was asked about this story (roll tape#2 o.q."they must do")

In anticipation of the 9/11 report, due out on Thursday, the John Kerry Campaign made Florida U.S. Senator Bob Graham, who was the Chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee when the terrorist attacks occurred, available for reporters on a national conference call today....Graham, who for a few months was a candidate for the Democratic nomination for President, continued his assault on the Bush Administration for their approach to tackling terrorism.

(roll tape#3 o.q."that answer is no")

In particular, Graham slammed the President for not holding anybody in the Intelligence Community at fault for their two costly errors - not being able to forecast the terror attacks, and for forthrightly stating that Iraq DID possess weapons of Mass Destruction

(roll tape#4 o.q. " on September the 11th")

Texas Democrat Jim Turner is the ranking Democrat on the Select Committee on Homeland Security...He said when it comes to protecting the country's homeland, the Bush Administration has their priorities out of whack (roll tape#5 o.q."at war")

Turner called the Administration's support for the Homeland Security Department overall as "tepid".
