Tampa bay area philanthropist Dr Kirin Patel was in Western India when the Tsunami struck, he has been involved in raising money for relief efforts for the eastern shores of India since Sunday, and has set up a challenge fund, pledging to match each dollar donated in the next week, hoping to raise 100,000 dollars. The Association for Community Organization Now, or ACORN is conducting a nationwide campaign against Jackson Hewitt, a chain of tax preparation offices. They say that Jackson Hewitt uses takes unfair advantage of poor people through its holiday loans refund anticipation ,loans and other overprices products. For the past two days, Almost 800 employees of at the Florida Crystal sugar mill in Palm Beach County have been on strike. Although contract negotiations have been taking place since October 28th, the workers did not see hope in the talks with management and a federal mediator could not bring the two sides together. Joaquin Almazan is a janitor and works in the parts division at the Sugar mill owned by the Okeelanta Corporation, a subsidiary of Florida Crystal.

Several professors in the Florida State University College of Medicine are threatening to resign if school administrators continue to pursue a proposed chiropractic school. The threatened resignations from assistant professors who work part time reflect a belief among many in the medical establishment that chiropractic is a "pseudo-science" that leads to unnecessary and sometimes harmful treatments. This summer a Florida delegation to the Presbyterian Church USA came to the churches bi-annual assembly with a proposal to stop investing in companies which support the Israeli occupation of Palestinian lands, and remove all investments that are currently made in those companies. The proposal passed, and now a group on Presbyterians concerns about the religious rift it may cause is trying to get the church to take back the policy. A new report leaked to the Miami herald has found that harassment and detention of immigrants and others seeking asylum in the United States is on the rise and is actually making the country less secure from terrorists.
