INTRO: One week ago today, Friday, Richard Paey was sentenced to twenty-five years in prison for drug trafficking, obtaining a controlled substance and possession of Oxycontin. Paey, a Pasco County resident has maintained all along that he was guilty of nothing and that he was only medicating himself. Pasco county Judge D. FOOD NOT BOMBS WON'T QUIT - Mitch Perry

As we reported earlier this week, there were 3 more arrests in Tampa's Massey Park last Sunday, again for feeding homeless people in the park without a permit.

On Monday, about 3 dozen activists, many from the group Food Not Bombs - held a demonstration in front of the Federal Courthouse in downtown Tampa, where they protested the recent arrests by serving up free food.

The arrests have intensified since Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio began stepping up enforcement in city parks...........

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta are reporting that many doctors are NOT advising their obese patients to lose weight despite a national obesity epidemic...The CDC reports that only about 40% of doctors told obese patients to lose weight in 2000, a slight decrease from a similar study conducted a decade earlier.

CITY COUNCIL TAKES UP USA PATRIOT ACT. . . AGAIN - Mitch Perry

Last Thursday night, the Tampa City Council voted to support a resolution advocating the revision of portions of the controversial anti-terrorism law known as the USA Patriot Act, which passed Congress weeks after the 9/11 attacks.

MOUNTAINTOP REMOVAL IN APPALACHIA - Radioactivity

Our guests were Dave Cooper and Ben Brown of Kentucky. They described mountaintop removal coal mining and what it is doing to the mountains and communities of Appalachia. Cooper lives in Lexington, Brown lives in a little town called McRoberts, Kentucky that is being flooded repeatedly because TECO took off the tops of the mountains surrounding the town. In 2002 they had five major floods due to mountaintop removal.

Last month a premature baby born to an inmate at the Hillsborough County Jail died shortly after her birth......In a subsequent investigation, a nurse practitioner was fired ......The 34 year old inmate - Kimberly Grey, in custody at the time on prostitution and cocaine charges, said she pleaded for medical help for 12 hours before giving birth to the boy in an infirmary restroom in early March.
