As part of a national anti-war initiative called April Days of Action Against Drones and Occupation, some USF students and community activists are reaching out for peace. During a rally today representatives from different groups passed out literature to students on the Tampa campus. Tampa Bay Bradley Manning Support Network’s Bill Livsey defended whistle-blowing by drawing attention to Manning’s prosecution.

Last night, President Barack Obama delivered the first State of the Union Address of his second term. WMNF’s Lenka Davis reports from two watch parties in Tampa, one organized by the Hillsborough County Young Democrats and the other one by Tampa Bay Young Republicans.
At Mangroves bar in South Tampa, just minutes before the president’s speech was televised, a member of the Hillsborough County Young Democrats, Tim Heberlein, highlighted three important issues he wanted to hear.

In their third debate Presidential candidates Barack Obama and Mitt Romney talked about plans for withdrawal from Afghanistan. President Obama has long said he will have occupation troops pulled from the country in late 2014, but his opponent has been less forthcoming with a timeline.
Al Cardenas, chair of the American Conservative Union, was at a foreign policy conference in Tampa this month. He said Romney is taking the right approach.

With 18 days until the election, the Obama camp is stepping up campaign efforts in key swing states. As Obama delivered remarks in Virginia Vice President Joe Biden addressed a crowded community hall in Sun City Center about Medicare and women’s rights during a half hour speech to the senior residents.
Biden cautioned the crowd of mostly senior citizens against the Romney/Ryan healthcare plan he says would raise Medicare costs for seniors by turning it into a voucher program.

With uprisings in overseas countries and U.S. occupations of places like Afghanistan, peace activists called attention to the problems yesterday in downtown St. Pete by hitting each other with pillows.
“Everybody is out here just hitting each other, but laughing at the same time. So, it’s kind of like a play on words.”
Elizabeth Dunn planned the event because, as she put it, it was on her bucket list. The idea was to promote peace through togetherness.

The war in Afghanistan is now in its twelfth year and some students in the Tampa Bay area have had enough. Ten members of Students for a Democratic Society, or SDS, rallied at USF Tampa today to speak out against the continued occupation of Afghanistan and other Middle Eastern countries. Matthew Hastings said the military spending can be better used to fund public education.

Two soldiers killed in Afghanistan are being honored this week in Tampa. Today, a police motorcade escorted the body of Staff Sergeant Ricardo Seija and his family from MacDill Air Force Base through the streets of Tampa. Along Bayshore Boulevard dozens of supporters lined the road with American flags. The procession was a reminder of the high price of war. But Bruce Hockensmith with the Lutz Patriots said the event this morning was about respect, not politics.
