Tampa City Council has passed on first reading a fertilizer ordinance that would cut down on the pollution that drains from lawns into the region’s waterways, including Tampa Bay. The excess nutrients lead to algae blooms. Five members of the public spoke in opposition to the ban this morning. But double that number, including local Sierra Club representative Phil Compton, urged Council to support a rainy-season ban on sale and use of nitrogen or phosphorus fertilizer.

Last night, on the eve of today's elections, Democratic Gubernatorial candidate Alex Sink made a "hometown" stop at the Ritz theater in Ybor City along with several other statewide Democratic contenders.
Virtually every democratic candidate on the state and local ballot was at the Ritz theater in Ybor City yesterday for a brief but fiery barnstorming rally to get the vote out in the neck and neck race between Democratic Gubernatorial candidate Alex Sink and Republican Rick Scott. Former Fl...

Much of the news media’s coverage of this election season has centered on a voting block that is far from diverse, the only difference among voters being the source of their anger. And with so many politicians that are desperate to appeal to a seemingly two-dimensional part of the electorate, the word diversity seems taboo when it comes to many campaign slogans. A rally on the outskirts of Tampa brought some local candidates face to face with a voting block that’s shunned at best, demonized a...

For the first time in recent memory the South Tampa Chamber of Commerce is hosting forums for local and statewide candidates on the November ballot. Today marked the first of these and a handful of those vying for local office confronted everything from transit to class size. Compared to the fierce debates that are making this year unusually volatile it was pretty quiet. The only testy exchange happened between two candidates who aren’t even running against one another.
That’s District One...

A Hillsborough Circuit Judge ruled today that John Dingfelder can remain on November’s ballot.
Dingfelder missed a deadline to resign from Tampa City Council and took his name off the ballot. The county’s Democratic Party then nominated him to be their candidate. The local Republican party sued, claiming that Dingfelder is not an eligible candidate, but today a judge ruled against them.
We spoke with Patricia Kemp, chair of the Democratic Party of Hillsborough County.

Digital billboards are one step closer to reality in Tampa. This morning, City Council passed a digital-billboard ordinance on first reading. Only two members voted against it, including Mary Mulhern, who wants the city to wait until after a safety study is released.
