On Wednesday the Hillsborough County Commission unanimously recommended going ahead with a high-speed ferry plan to connect south Hillsborough with MacDill Air Force Base. During public comment several residents spoke in favor of the ferry. Environmentalist Mariella Smith said the fragile ecology of the shoreline near the proposed terminal will be protected.

Commissioner Ken Hagan said supporting the ferry project is an important step, but more needs to happen for it to become reality.

Tampa is one of the 5 most congested cities in America, and one proposed solution has been to add toll roads within the medians of the interstates throughout Hillsborough, Pinellas and Polk counties. In a push to influence voters during the last few days before the election, Yes on Greenlight is flying a banner from a sailboat near heavily trafficked bridges across Tampa Bay.

The group is encouraging voters to support the Greenlight Pinellas ballot initiative to fund transit by increasing sales tax by a penny and eliminating the transportation portion of the property tax.

Greenlight Pinellas could be heading toward a blowout defeat; a new poll released late Friday by St. Pete Polls finds that Pinellas County voters reject the proposed sales tax increase for transit by a twelve point margin.

A transit plan for Pinellas County is gaining momentum. On Thursday, Congress member Kathy Castor endorsed the Yes to Greenlight initiative during a media conference in Midtown St. Petersburg.

“Oftentimes, the buses don’t run on a regular schedule,” said the representative for Florida’s 14th district. “Many people don’t have a couple of cars to fight the traffic… We need better transit options.”

Hillsborough County may consider a high-speed ferry linking MacDill Air Force Base with communities in the south county where many workers live.

Last month one environmental group, Audubon Florida, criticized the plan because a terminal is proposed for reclaimed wetlands in the Schultz Preserve.

But now, the chair of another group, the Tampa Bay Sierra Club's Kent Bailey, tells WMNF they support the proposed ferry across Tampa Bay.
