Peace activists deliver varied anti-war messages at USF Tampa listen

As part of a national anti-war initiative called April Days of Action Against Drones and Occupation, some USF students and community activists are reaching out for peace. During a rally today representatives from different groups passed out literature to students on the Tampa campus. Tampa Bay Bradley Manning Support Network’s Bill Livsey defended whistle-blowing by drawing attention to Manning’s prosecution.

One of the most active anti-war groups in the Tampa Bay area is celebrating ten years of resistance Saturday.
We spoke with Chris Ernesto, a co-founder of St. Pete for Peace, about what they've done since 2003 and what's to come for the anti-war and social justice group.
At the anniversary celebration hey will debut a film about their ten years of activism.
It's at 7 p.m. Saturday March 9 at L-Train, 900 Central Ave. in St. Pete.

With uprisings in overseas countries and U.S. occupations of places like Afghanistan, peace activists called attention to the problems yesterday in downtown St. Pete by hitting each other with pillows.
“Everybody is out here just hitting each other, but laughing at the same time. So, it’s kind of like a play on words.”

The war in Afghanistan is now in its twelfth year and some students in the Tampa Bay area have had enough. Ten members of Students for a Democratic Society, or SDS, rallied at USF Tampa today to speak out against the continued occupation of Afghanistan and other Middle Eastern countries. Matthew Hastings said the military spending can be better used to fund public education.

Peace activists nationwide are speaking out Monday against what they see as FBI oppression against protesters. In downtown Tampa, ten people protested anti-terrorism tactics and legislation in front of the Sam Gibbons Federal Courthouse. Jared Hamil heads the Tampa Committee to Stop FBI Oppression which is participating in a national call-in day to ask a U.S. attorney to call off investigations of 22 anti-war activists.

Friday is the International Day of Peace. People all over the world celebrate the day with festivals, concerts and moments of silence. At an elementary and middle school in Pinellas County, they have a whole week’s worth of events. Joyce Reichle is the primary years program coordinator at James B. Sanderlin IB World School.
