Tampa is consistently ranked in the top five most dangerous metropolitan areas for bicycle and pedestrian deaths.
A recent accident where a child was killed crossing a section of Busch Boulevard that lacks crosswalks prompted a discussion on safety at Tampa City Council Thursday morning.
Tampa City Council member Mary Mulhern questioned Debbie Hunt from the Florida Department of Transportation.

Hillsborough County has a new type of traffic signal: a flashing yellow arrow. Drivers traveling on Fowler Avenue near Thonotosassa may encounter the new type of light at the Jefferson Road intersection.
The flashing yellow arrow directs motorists in the left turn lane to turn with caution after first yielding to oncoming traffic. Kris Carson, Florida Department of Transportation spokesperson says a national study shows the benefits of the new signal.

Tampa Bay Area Regional Transportation Authority is looking to expand their school car-pooling program to more schools in other counties. TBARTA’s program currently has 1,200 parents registered.

Pinellas County Commissioners today disregarded the recommendations of their staff and the staff of the Pinellas Planning Council (PPC) by unanimously approving a change in the county’s land use plan.
The amendment will allow construction of a Lowe’s big box hardware store on property previously zoned for industry on U.S. 19 in Tarpon Springs. Lowe’s will be required to spend about $4-million on traffic changes on the site.
