A Senate panel has voted to give President Barack Obama the authority to use military force against Syria in response to a deadly chemical weapons attack.

The vote today in the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee was 10-to-7, with one senator voting present. The full Senate and House are expected to vote on the measure next week.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is warning that what he calls punitive action taken against Syria for an alleged chemical weapons attack last week could unleash more turmoil and bloodshed in that nation's civil war.
