It’s been 50 years since Jack Kerouac’s classic On the Road was published. His writings are often considered a catalyst for the counterculture.

What isn’t so well known about the man who coined the phrase the beat generation, was that he lived his last years in St. Petersburg, where he died in 1969 at the age of 47.

Former USF English professor and Tampa resident Lawrence Broer knew Kerouac. Earlier this week, the 68-year-old told WMNF about the first time he encountered Kerouc.

On the Road was published 50 years ago this week.
