The Tampa City Council this morning agreed to raise the fees for commercial construction by 75 percent and residential construction fees will rise 10 percent.
Councilwoman Linda Saul-Sena asked Cyndy Miller, the director of growth management and development, what could be done to speed up the permitting process, which she said is a loud source of criticism within the development community.
The Council approved a motion from Construction Service and the Fire Chief on how the time to review developments has improved in six months.
On a separate topic, Councilman Thomas Scott said he wanted to have city staff review whether construction fees can be waived for affordable housing programs. That led to a separate discussion on the city’s determination to tell developers to include sidewalks in their plans.
Councilman Charlie Miranda said the city must review its sidewalk process.
Councilwoman Linda Saul–Sena said sidewalks are a great addition to enhancing neighborhoods. She said she hoped the council could conduct a workshop on sidewalks in the near future that would include neighborhood association members as well as developers.
