A new report from an energy watchdog group says Florida utilities now spend more than a billon dollars a year importing coal from other states.

The report, from the [Union of Concerned Scientists](http://www.ucs.org, says Florida is one of 38 states considered to be a net importer of coal. Report co-author Steve Clemmer says the state is also now one of just 11 spending more than a billion dollars a year importing the fossil fuel.

The report calls on Florida utilities to stop importing coal and other natural resources, and divert the money into local alternative energy project.
